I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked up this book, I just really like pirates!! It was a little hard to adapt to Ananna's "lovely" pirate grammar, but once I could mentally accept it, I loved her. Ananna was such a fierce character, she's didn't take crap from anyone and was more that willing to figure out her life on her own. It was really quick the way Ananna and Naji became bound to each other, it was a little hard to believe, but *shrug* what are you gonna do.
The book had the potential to drag out in horribly while Ananna and Naji were traipsing through the desert but Clarke found a way to keep us engaged. I also liked the way that she subtly showed us bits of Naji's personality such as his interaction with Leila, and revealing to Ananna that he didn't truly want to kill her.
My heart breaks for Ananna, her parents want to marry her off, she's had more then one run in with a beautiful women who's done something to hurt her in some way shape or form, and that just solidifies her own "plain" appearance. She's got a long, hard road ahead of her.
